Golf: Plaay’s History Maker Golf
This page is the jumping off point for all my projects using the Plaay History Maker Golf game. At this point there are two projects on the plate: fictional and all-time greats.
Right now, the all-time greats is something a dabble with and really haven’t started in a substantial way…no games or matches have been played. Basically, I’m in the process of setting it up. What it will be is a giant, double elimination tournament using the All-Time greats (1930-1999), the Pioneers (pre 1930), the 2000s all-time best, and the 2010s all-time best in a single tournament with 364 golfers. And someday I’ll start playing matches.
The project I have started uses the Plaay games fictional player sets. With most of their games, Plaay has a set of fictional players/teams that develop and decline with the passing years. They also real life sets and obviously all-time greats and you can see from the other project. The fictional sets allow you to create your world without any expectation. Unlike other sports, the golf fictional sets are released every other year. AT the end of 2024, it went through a rebranding that made a lot of sense. Currently, the sets are 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023, and 2025. The first four were called Pro Natioanl Golf, but with 2025 set it is rebranded the Pro World Golf tour reflecting a more international status that these sets have had all along.
Originally, my plan was to set up a schedule and replay it with each passing season. 2017 has 42 events and 162 golfers in the set. However, after the 2019 set was released, an additional 36 fringe players were added bring the total to 198 players available. Since then, each set has been issued with 198 players in the set. Furthermore, some new courses have become available and I’ve purchased another set of 4 courses since strating the 2017 season. Instead, the seasons and tour will evolve and change from season to season. One will have to go to each season as they become available to see how many events that season includes and other variables which will likely change with each season. I know the 2019 season will differ from the 2017.
As mentioned above, the seasons will vary; therefore, I’ll provide a little more about each season at the top of its specific webpage. Some things will be constant, so I’ll touch on them here.
Events will be broken down into six different levels: Majors, WGE, A, B, C, & D. I use an old FedEx point system to give season points for the results with the winners receiving 600 (Majors), 550 (WGE), 500 (A & B), and 300 (C & D) points. There will be 4 Majors and 4 WGE tournaments throughout the season. The fields for these events will be determined by the current standings with the number decreasing as the season progresses. With 162 players (2017), the first event (a WGE event) will be “limited” to the top 132 players. With 198 players (all other seasons), the first event will be the top 150. Regardless of the number of players in a season, the final event (a Major which is also the final tournament of the season) will be limited to the top 64. The other levels will vary in number from season to season. Creating different levels is to mimic real life. For example, the top golfers don’t play in every tournament. Those rated at the best tournament rating (a 1 for those familiar with the game) will play in all A level events, but none of the other events. C level events will see a limited number of players with “3” tournament ratings (no 1 or 2) and the rest of the available players (those at 4 or below). This gives the lower golfers a chance to perform a little and for those who get results, they’ll be high enough in the standings to play in the big events.
The season champion is the golfer with the most points. I don’t subscribe to a “playoff” for this. I’m the same way with the racing game. Whoever has the best total season is the champion for that season. That said, the last tournament is a Major, the second-to-last is an A level, and the third-to-last is a WGE tournament, thus there will be a good number of points available at the end of the season.
Regarding the playing of the tournaments, I use the games tournament mode with a couple of personal modifications. Finally, for the golfer in contention in the final round, I use Quick Play charts created by another gamer, though with a few of my own modifications too.
A final quick note about fictional sets. They are a fictional world in which the players evolve. Young players will develop; older players will decline. While it is fictional, it is the same world. You’ll see mostly the same players. Even with the rebranding, some new players have joined, but the majority are familiar names from the previous sets.
