Race #1- Ice Brew 600, Northern Lights MotorDome, 3/4/2012

The highlight, or lowlight, was only 16 racers finshed the race out of the 43 starters. A crash on turn 13 collected 26 of the 42 racers with 18 unable to continue. Turn 23 saw another crash collecting 7 of 22 racers with 6 unable to continue.

This race saw an early big crash shake things up with eventually 28 of 43 cars still running at the end. Turn 6 saw “the big one” collecting 24 of 43 racers with 8 unable to continue.

A crash in Turn 2 collected 8 racers, but all were able to repair and continue resulting in 37 of 43 drivers still going at the end of the race. 6 lead changes created the some excitement too as once more the driver who led the most turns couldn’t bring home the victory.

No big crashes as everyone seems to settle into the season. 7 lead changes in a 40 turn event kept it exciting.

Whether it’s dirt tracks, superspeedways, or road courses, sometimes racing is just a bunch of cars driving in a loops. Dave Lilly qualified sixth, took the lead on Turn 7, and 21 Turns later took the checkered flag having never been passed. Young Denny Baker qualified for his first race and impressed with a top 5 finish too.

Russ O’Casey led most of the first half of the race. However, the second half saw 8 lead changes, including the eventual winner taking the lead on the final turn!

This race was 60 turns of excitement! There were 14 lead changes and then the “big one” happened on Turn 53. 15 cars collected with 8 unable to finish. Along with some of the early action it left only 25 of 43 cars racing at the end.

Race #8- Dot Cola 400, Dixie Regional Raceway, 4/29/2012

Qualifying only mattered for getting into the race. There are 60 racers, but only 43 starting spots. In turn 1, a big crash collected 18 racers completely shuffling the field. On the other hand, only 1 racer couldn’t continue racing, so it was just shuffling the deck, not wiping out the field. 10 lead changes, half in the last 10 turns kept things up in the air. Thus far in the 2012 season, 8 races, 8 different winners!

A 30 turn race that saw 7 lead changes, the final lead change took place on turn 29 with Stu Yurich leading, he ends up having a mechanical issue that takes him out of the race to finish 39th. Pete MacAtee takes advantage of the Yurich’s bad luck to become the first 2-time winner this season.

This race had all sorts of excitement including a threat of rain for the last 3 turns, but they got all 40 turns in before the rain finally arrived. Two big crashes in the first third shuffled the racing order, but only knocked out one driver. Montana led the first 15 turns, but then there were 8 lead changes in the remaining 25 turns, with 4 changes in the last 8 turns!

Race #11- Giggles Fruit Candy 400, Heart of America Motor Speedway, 5/20/2012

Five lead changes in the first 10 turns promised an exciting raise, but instead things settled down with on one lead change through the middle 20 turns. As the checkered flag neared, the challengers resurfaced resulting in a couple more lead changes in the final turns to keep everyone guessing, but Yurich held off the final charges for his second win of the season.

The first half of this 50 turn event saw but one lead challenge. The action picked up in the second half of the race with 6 lead changes, including 3 in the final 5 turns. In the end Greco becomes the 3rd driver this season to notch two victories.

This race was chaos from start to finish, but without crashes. 38 of 43 racers were still running when the checkered flag drop. 9 lead changes in 40 turns, including a lead change on the last turn to produce a shocking winner. The other surprise was Vince Moore who was making just his 4th start of the season finished in the Top 5!

The season returns to the site of the mayhem at the Motordome in first race of the season. And the mayhem would continue. While the race was only 23 turns, there were 12 lead changes (including 2 on the final turn) and only 23 of 43 racers finished the race (7 more than in the first race). It started early with a big crash on turn 1 collecting 26 of the 43 racers with 12 ending their race without completing the first turn!

Race #16- Planatation 400, Dixie Regional Raceway, 6/24/2012

This race was the last of the first half of the season. This completed 16 of 32 races and marked the second trip to the Dixie Raceway. A race record for most cars still running was set as 40 of the 43 racers were still on the track at the checkered flag. It was a good, solid race without being the chaos of the previous event. The finishing order provided the real excitement as 3 drivers finished in the top 5 for the first time this season, including Dave Sanchez in just his 5th start of the season. In the end, the familiar face of Pete MacAtee grabbed his 3rd victory of the season.
