Sports Simulation Games (Board & Computer)
One of my hobbies is sports simulation games, both board games and computer. I play or have played a number of different games from a number of different companies over the decades. Some games I still play, others I have fond memories, and a few…not so much. The fact that I am using a particular game is in no way an endorsement. While most are terrific games and I would recommend them to others, a few are because of a lack of options or games are good, but I have disagreements with their business models. So if you want to know what I think of a game…ask. I will provide a quick blurb about each company to provide a little context.
I have a bunch of “projects” using different games plus I’m still in a league.
This page provides a list of the games I’m playing and a list of projects using that particular game. As I get the webpages published which coincide with games, the list will become links.
Plaay.com or Plaay Games
Plaay offers a wide variety of games through their classic and PlaayNow brands, which go beyond just sports games. All Plaay games are “board” games in that they do not offer computer versions. As you’ll see from the list below, I play a lot of them and own even more!
Games in which I currently have one or more projects:
- Soccer Blast (Soccer/Football)
- History Maker Golf (Golf)
- Highlight Maker Hoops (Basketball)
- Let’s Plaay Tennis (Tennis)
- Red, White, & Blue Racin’ (Nascar style racing)
- Bowl-O-Rama (Bowling)
Games in which I am considering developing a project:
- Hockey Blast (Ice Hockey)
- History Maker Baseball (Baseball)
- Second Season (US Football)
APBA Games
There were a few other sports games I played before being introduced to APBA, but I consider APBA to be my real starting point in this hobby. They currently offer a variety of board games and have a computer version of their baseball game. In the past, their options included additional board and computer games, some of which I still have and play.
Games in which I currently have one or more projects:
- APBA Baseball (Baseball: both board and computer)
Stone Mountain Press
Stone Mountain Press or SMP is a smaller, more niche game provider. Their games are generally available in both board and computer options.
Games in which I currently have one or more projects:
- Dice United (Soccer/Football)
- Stone Cold Hockey (Hockey)
DKS or ActionPC
Dave Koch Sports (DKS) produces ActionPC computer sports games. They have the 4 major north american team sports and golf currently available.
Games in which I currently have one or more projects:
- ActionPC Basketball
- ActionPC Football
Current league
Strat-o-Matic
Strat-o-Matic or Strat along with APBA are two of the most recognized names in the hobby. Strat offers both board and computer versions of the four major North American team sports.
I don’t have any projects, but do own and occasionally play.
Out of the Park Development or OOTP
Offers computer games for baseball and hockey; they are very deep games; and I own both.
I don’t have any projects at this time.
All of the games listed above are simulations that player data to simulate results. There is strategy as there would be with any sport in making decisions much as a manager or coach would. Whether the players are real life or fictional, the results are based on probabilities given the individual players stats or abilities (depending on the game).
The games listed below are not based on individual players, but incorporate skill of the game player and luck. The below games are excellent choices for a game night regardless if the others are sports fans are not…though it is easy to explain the game concepts to those who have some familiarity with the sport, but they don’t need to be an expert.
Flamme Rouge
This is a cycling game for multiple players. It can be played solo, but it is meant for multiple, competing players. There is an expansion that adds more options and details to the game.
Heat: Pedal to the Metal
It shares designers with Flamme Rouge, but is a Grand Prix racing game. The solo mode is incredibly challenging making it more appealing for solo players, but the multiple player game is exciting. The game has various advanced options you can incorporate, but play a few basic games first. There is an expansion that adds more tracks and the ability for more players.
